Kindaunbothered

From calendars to chaos, and figuring it out slowly and kindly.

Where I’m At Right Now

A few months ago my days looked completely different. Full calendars, constant decisions, people needing things from me all day long. Then I became a full-time parent, and almost overnight, all of that structure just disappeared.

I thought I’d feel relief. Instead I felt overwhelmed in a totally new way. No meetings, but somehow no off-switch either. I quickly realized that leaving a demanding career didn’t mean leaving overwhelm behind. It just changed shape.

What surprised me most is how much of it was living in my body, not just my to-do list. My nervous system was still stuck in “go” mode, and nothing about my new life was telling it to stop.

So I’ve been figuring out small ways to come back down. Nothing fancy, honestly. Just little things I do in the moment:

Before I walk into a room after a stressful moment, I pause at the door and take one slow breath. Sounds too simple to matter, but it changes how I show up.

I try to get outside for five minutes, even just to the mailbox and back. No phone. It resets me faster than almost anything else.

When I’m overwhelmed I just say it out loud, even to myself: “okay, I’m overstimulated right now.” Naming it takes some of the power out of it.

I clear off one small space, like the kitchen counter. I don’t know why it helps as much as it does, but less visual mess seems to mean less noise in my head too.

And when my mind is spinning, I ask myself one question: what do I actually need right now? Water, quiet, a minute alone? Usually the answer is a lot smaller than the panic makes it feel.

I don’t have this figured out. Some days still feel like too much. But I’ve noticed I bounce back faster than I used to. A hard moment doesn’t turn into a hard hour the way it used to.

I’m still in the middle of this whole shift, from a career that filled every hour to a slower, more minimalist version of family life. I’m just sharing what I’m learning along the way. If any of this sounds familiar, I’d love for you to stick around.
